What is a GPU?

The backbone of Cloudalize’s cloud technology are graphical-processing units (GPU). Cloudalize’s two co-founders had a vision of creating new horizons for GPU technology. They envisaged a world where GPU was available from the Cloud to unlock new possibilities in content creation, artificial intelligence (AI), 3D rendering and modelling and much more.

What makes a GPU special?

Modern CPUs are composed of two or more separate processing units called cores. This is the reason why many of the leading CPU manufacturers market their products as multi-core. Each of these cores reads instructions to run programs. To do this, CPUs do serial processing of mathematical calculation or computation at a time.

Until recently, CPUs could handle all the programming demanded by modern computing. However, as technology advances and software vendors upgrade their programs to include more and more features, the CPUs are no longer able to manage.

On the other hand, a GPU consists of thousands of cores to do computations in parallel. This gives the GPUs the ability to do more computations all at once and to run very intense computations which would overload an average CPU.

Here is where GPUs have a technological advantage over CPUs to support high-intensive graphic programs such as computer-aided design (CAD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Building Information Modelling (BIM), video editing and generative design (GD) programming.

The graphics (video) card is the hardware, and like a motherboard of a computer, a graphics card incorporates the GPU.
